Anderman Lecture Series: Alison Rossiter

Alison Rossiter’s unique handmade camera-less photographs emphasize the process and materiality of the photographic image in an increasingly digital age. She collects expired photo papers spanning every decade of the 20thcentury and explores the visual potential that remains in these often forgotten relics. Working with chemistry and the specific marks of time left on the paper itself, Rossiter creates minimalist compositions varying from atmospheric scenes that subtly evoke landscape, to images consisting of organic forms or geometric shapes. The photographer’s process travels through time and the history of photography, giving materials of the past a new place in the present.

Alison Rossiter was born in Jackson, MS in 1953 and currently lives and works in New Jersey. Her photographs are in the permanent collections of numerous major institutions. Rossiter’s recently published book, Expired Paper, copublished by Radius Books and Yossi Milo Gallery, has just been nominated for Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation photobook of the year.

Barbarian Tropes Framed Anew by Tamara Bentley

Professor Bentley's talk examines three Chinese incised lacquer folding screens produced between 1665 and 1800. All three screens include segments depicting Europeans hunting exotic animals and parading with gifts; two screens specifically indicate that the Europeans are Dutch.  Analysis highlights the ways in which these Chinese screens borrowed foreigner  imagery from earlier Japanese Nanban screens, and also from earlier paintings of Mongols hunting, and those barbarian  constructs were even marketed back to Europe.
