Logan Lecture: Migration, Diaspora, and Displacement

The movements of people across lands range from voluntary migration to forced displacement, exile, and enslavement.  This panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Saloni Mathur, will feature the perspectives of artists Shirin Neshat and Hew Locke on topics related to diaspora, migration and identity. The panel seeks to address the following question: how do individuals in diasporic communities nurture collective memory and ideas of heritage, perhaps experience alienation in the settled place, and remain connected to their ancestral homelands? Artists consider cultural and physical separation and explore the resulting conditions these experiences propagate through a critique of historic traditions and the legacies of colonialism based on their own personal backgrounds and multi-faceted identities.
