6-week class.

This class will examine concepts of light through a variety of media. We will explore what it means to live and create as solar beings, in the gravity and thrall of celestial bodies. Through camera-less photography, we will take a multifaceted view of natural and artificial light, reconsidering the way that we interact with objects and the world around us. We will explore patterns and shapes made by objects alive and dead, objects organic and man-made, objects rendered recognizable and unrecognizable. Our explorations together will evolve into multidimensional, multiscale works as the weeks unfold, with an emphasis on the group pushing itself to test the limits of each of the media we will use.

No prior technical knowledge is required for this class. The class will be broken up into sections of different media with thorough introductions of each medium and viewing of artworks. Students will be focused initially on small experiments, which we hope to incorporate into more experimental, integrated works by the end. With a limited amount of class time each week, we will repeat and return to media and activities so students can legitimately explore the possibilities of a medium and gain some mastery.

Class 2 – Cyanotype experiments

Class 3 – Screening of “Mothlight” by Stan Brakhage, and painting on film.

Class 4 – Proto-photographic magic lanterns and filmic processes

Class 5 - Film media studio day

Explore the museum galleries to create an entire production inspired by the artwork. Together we will write, design, and act in a play to be performed in the art museum!

This 4-week course will focus on the concept of the trace: the footprint left in the sand, the sunt an line of a watch left on the wearer's wrist, fallen leaves that imprint themselves on the sidewalk, and more. A trace is the image left behind by the presence of a person or an object. In most instances, that person or object touched the paper or substrate that retains their image.

Using cyanotypes (blueprint camera-less photographs), drawings of shadows, rubbings of objects (frottage), painting with objects as stencils, and impressions of objects as stamps (lipstick kisses, fruit prints, and more), we will explore how to make images of the world through the traces that people and things leave behind.

Each class will begin with a discussion of a short reading and a presentation with examples of artists and their works utilizing trace imagery. After a demonstration of techniques and a set of directed exercises, students will create final works with the ideas and methods we learn about the trace. Come prepared to discover an alternative form of looking at and imaging the world!

Timeline:

Class 1: History of the trace image and camera-less photography

Class 2: Silhouettes and tracing shadows in art

Class 3: Rubbings/frottage in art

Class 4: Using objects as stencils and stamps (including collagraphs)

Materials: Cyanotype/sunprint paper will be provided for students and is included in the materials fee of $8 for this class. Students will purchase the remainder of the materials on their own.

In this 4-week class, students will learn the basics of tapestry weaving, creating woven switches, and soft circuits. Students will design and weave their own tapestry woven with conductive yarn, and use it to control LEDs.

Students will create small experiments in this class, culminating in a finished tapestry, with conductive yarns woven throughout, that can control up to 10 LEDs. Students do not need to have any prior technical knowledge, although any experience with weaving or electronic textiles will be helpful, but not required. This is a beginner lever class that will introduce students to tapestry weaving techniques, different woven switches, and how to create soft circuits.

Timeline:

Class 1: Intro to soft circuits and LEDS. Students will create a simple soft circuit with an LED, a soft switch, and a battery.

Class 2: Intro to tapestry weaving. Students will learn several different tapestry weaving techniques.

Class 3: Weaving our switches. This week the focus will be on weaving our tapestries, and integrating conductive yarns to create soft switches.

Class 4: Creating our circuits. This week will focus on stitching the soft circuits, and connecting our weavings to the circuits.

Materials: Some materials will be provided and are reflected in a $16 materials fee included in the pricing for this class. Students will purchase the remainder of materials on their own.

If you think renovating your bathroom or kitchen is a complex process, imagine what it looked like for a seven-floor, 146,000-square foot museum building. Meet the team who played a key role in organizing and overseeing the new galleries, from drawings to reality.

From preparing for the undertaking (trotting the globe with fellow staff in search of inspiration from other museums, collaborating with nearly every department of the DAM, coordinating the movement of artworks, working with designers, and more) to the many surprises and triumphs as it all unfolded, they'll answer the question that's on all our minds...How in the world did they pull it off?
Walk away with a new appreciation for the many hands and all that went into planning and execution, from individual galleries to the entire building.

4-week class.

Both beginner and professional writers often agree that the most daunting part of the writing process is sitting and staring at a blank screen, trying to figure out what to write, or how to start. In this class we’ll replace the blank screen with works of art from the Denver Art Museum, and allow what we see to inspire and inform our work as we create a collection of poetry.

This class will be a mix of learning the skills of writing poetry (form, rhyme, metaphor, alliteration, language, etc.), and getting out into the museum to free write and create. Each class will focus on a different aspect of poetry and explore a different exhibit of the museum. By the end of the class, each poet will have a minimum of four poems in their poetry collection. Both beginner and experienced writers are welcome!

Timeline:

Class 1: First Half: In the classroom. Intro to poetry. Skills focus: Setting and form.

Second Half: In the galleries: Paintings (focusing on lush poetic settings). Time to share and receive feedback if desired.

Class 2: First Half: In the classroom: Skills focus: Character and language.

Second Half: In the galleries: Fashion. Time to share and receive feedback if desired.

Class 3: First Half: In the classroom. Skills focus: Personification and language continued. Second Half: In the galleries: Objects. Time to share and receive feedback if desired.

Class 4: First Half: In the classroom. Skills focus: Storytelling, Sharing your work. Second Half: In the galleries: Writer’s choice. Time to share and receive feedback, wrap up.

This 4-week class explores the relationship between painting and movement as acts of creative expression utilizing the artist’s body. Using acrylic paint, watercolor, canvas, and paper, participants will discover how to combine motion and painting into a single artwork. Connections will be made to performance documentation works and action paintings in the Denver Art Museum collection through gallery visits and digital images.

Each class will begin with a discussion of one action painting (e.g., Elaine de Kooning’s 1959 Bullfight) or one performance documentation work (e.g., Ana Teresa Fernández's 2015 Erasure 4) that inspires full body gestures like jumping, spinning, and dancing. The chosen artwork will serve as the gateway into a demonstration of techniques and activities, including motion painting prompts, painting while moving, and group reflections on the traces of movement seen in paintings.

Each week participants can expect:

1. To learn about the connection between painting and movement art;

2. To be guided through different forms of movement in painting as individuals;

3. To action paint collectively on a large-scale;

4. and, to celebrate and discuss the group’s accomplishments of the day.

Timeline:

Class 1: View and discuss Elaine de Kooning’s Bullfight (1959) and action paintings, practice action painting

Class 2: View and discuss Ana Teresa Fernández's Erasure 4 (2015) and performance, discuss difference between action painting and performance, practice painting while moving

Class 3: Visit and discuss Disruption and Curious Visions exhibitions with a focus on artworks that inspire movement, finish works from classes 1 and 2

Class 4: Action paint collectively on a large-scale canvas

One-day workshop.

Ever wanted something flashy on your wrist? Join us for this one-day workshop, and create your very own bracelet with LEDs. Students will sew a simple soft circuit, and then decorate it with felt embellishments. Learn a simple soft circuit and create something you can leave wearing!

In this one-day workshop, participants will learn the basics of creating a soft circuit. We will create a soft circuit with a snap as a switch, to create a bracelet that lights up when it is closed around your wrist. Each participant will stitch their soft circuit and then decorate their bracelet.

Materials: Some materials will be provided and are reflected in a $7 materials fee included in the pricing for this class. Students will purchase the remaining materials on their own.

We will dive into the stories of a few of these women’s careers in the field of photography, consider ways photographers influence each other and future generations, and discover how contemporary photographers approach some of the oldest subjects in the history of photography—landscape and portraiture—with new perspectives. From one of the earliest photographs in our collection to examples from throughout the 20th century to photographers working today, this talk will spotlight women who have innovated, influenced, and contributed to the history of the medium and the field today.

See a trove of newly identified photographs by groundbreaking artist Georgia O’Keeffe in Georgia O’Keeffe, Photographer, which reveals a new aspect of the modernist artist’s career through nearly 100 photographs.

While she focused on her mastery of painting for decades, O’Keeffe also was very fond of expressing her unique perspective through other mediums, such as photography. Her creative identity and singular artistry were well established by the time she focused on her photography in the mid-1950s, showing the artist’s ongoing fascination with the cycles and transformations of nature.
