In this class, students will learn how to use oil paints as the primary medium by introducing fundamental painting techniques and materials. Students will study composition, basic color theory, painting terminology, methods of application, working from observation, and historical contexts. The primary subject will be figures and portraits in a landscape or atmospheric setting. Students will learn how to see, with an emphasis on composition, proportion, and balance. Denver Art Museum exhibitions, such as Eyes On: Julie Buffalohead and Mi Tierra: Contemporary Artists Explore Place, will be used to teach students how to contextualize the self and place both visually and conceptually.

 

What to Expect: During most classes, the instructor will demonstrate painting and present a lecture. Students will also work on prepping their surfaces for painting, and then working on their individual paintings. The instructor will offer feedback to each student throughout each class period. Students can expect to take home two finished works of art. Students do not need any prior knowledge for this course.

 

Timeline:

4/5-Class 1 - Learning processes and safety protocols for painting, starting first painting still life

4/12-Class 2 - Continue still life

4/19-Class 3 - Begin landscape painting

4/26-Class 4 - Finish landscape painting

 

Materials: All materials are included in class pricing and will be provided to students on the first day of class.

 

Educator: Samara Johnson, samaratjohnson.com

Samara Johnson is an exhibiting multi-disciplinary artist, working with painting, fibers, sculpture, and non-traditional artistic mediums, such as horse hair and expanding foam. Her work conveys a sense of empathy and connection with animals and the body from the inside out, gleaning inspiration from her upbringing in Alaska as well as her lifelong experiences with horses and various other animals. Johnson holds an MFA in Drawing and Painting from the University of Colorado Boulder, a BFA in Drawing and Painting and a BA in French from Sonoma State University, and is currently a professor of the arts.
