1-Day Workshop | Cyanotypes

Running Time: 4 hours

Students will have to opportunity to learn how to create cyanotypes using varying found objects, drawing on transparencies, photography, and the sun! This process is engaging and involves working with exposure to light. It is an accessible and fun way to learn how to draw with light exposure.


What to Expect: Students can expect to be playing with cyanotype processes from laying their objects on top of the pre-treated cloth to drawing on transparencies, culminating in final images uncovered by light exposure. The results will be small experiments from which students can achieve many finished works. Students do not need any prior knowledge for this course.  


Materials: All materials are included in class pricing and will be provided to students at the beginning of class.


Educator: Samara Johnson,  

Samara Johnson is an exhibiting multi- disciplinary artist, working with painting, fibers, sculpture, and non-traditional artistic mediums, such as horse hair and expanding foam. Her work conveys a sense of empathy and connection with animals and the body from the inside out, gleaning inspiration from her upbringing in Alaska as well as her lifelong experiences with horses and various other animals. Johnson holds an MFA in Drawing and Painting from the University of Colorado Boulder, a BFA in Drawing and Painting and a BA in French from Sonoma State University, and is currently a professor of the arts.
